Conga Line in Hell (1999)

In festive atmosphere, a colourful concert of Latin -American rhythms and dance music.

The evening kicks off with Charlie Barber‘s Samba-Round, a potent re-mix of traditional Spanish street music and drumming from Brazilian carnival.

The dramatic Conga Line in Hell by Uruguayan composer Miguel del Aguila can be heard alongside Javier Alvarez‘ Metro Chabacano together with music by the master of Argentinian tango Astor Piazzolla and Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.

One of the best known and loved Latin-American musicians of the new generation, Victor Jara was amongst the thousands of Chileans rounded up and later tortured and shot, during Pinochet’s military regime.

Also in the programme are two commissioned works: Simon Thorne‘s Frank’s Football and Amazonica from jazz musician and composer Paula Gardiner.
