Moulin Rouge
music for E. A. Dupont’s 1928 film
For four players:
vln, b cl, perc (marimba & bongos), DJ
Duration: 70 minutes
Made in 1928, Moulin Rouge is the story of an eternal love triangle set in the world of entertainment. Though described as โBritainโs first Superfilmโ, the overall impression is far from British. Directed by Ewald Andrรฉ Dupont and featuring Russian actress Olga Tschechowa, the elaborate sets and rich shadowy lighting in particular recall the contemporary German cinema.Charlie Barberโs new score โ performed by four musicians and DJ โ is influenced by both traditional Parisian cabaret and contemporary urban culture.
For the film: Ewald Andrรฉ Dupont (Director); Werner Brandes (Cinematography); Alfred Junge (Art Direction)
Film cast: Olga Tschechowa (Parysia); Eve Gray (Margaret); Jean Bradin (Andre); Georges Trรฉville (Father); Marcel Vibert (Marquis); Blanche Bernis (Wardrobe Mistress)
First performance at Chapter Cinema, Cardiff on 6 November 2004
with Thoby Davis (violin), Steve Moss (bass clarinet), Matthew West (percussion), DJ Jaffa
