Concert by candlelight
s sax, str qrt
In an age when artists worldwide are discovering and promoting common ground between culture, this candlelit concert brings together music of extraordinary intensity – from Byzantine liturgy to Arabic rhythms and Spanish song.
The concert feautures Charlie Barber‘s new work inspired by a collection of songs, the Cantigas de Santa Maria, from medieval Spain. King Alfonso X, who created this collection, was one of Spain’s most significant leaders, fostering interaction, tolerance and cultural harmony amongst Christian, Jewish an Islamic communities. Charlie’s new work reflects these intercultural aspirations.
Influenced by the rites of the Greek Orthodox Church, the evocative music of John Tavener be heard alongside the lyrical work of 14th century composer-poet Guillaume de Machaut.
Also in the programme is music by the celebrated musician John Dunstable. who dominated the European stage in the early 15th century, together with a modern classic by Arvo Pärt whose reputation has blossome as a composer of sacred music for a secular age.
