Pacifika (1999)

music from around the Pacific Oceon – Australia, Japan, Chile, Indonesia and the West Coast of America

The concert brings together music by the godfather of ‘minimalism’ – the California-based Terry Riley – and Fire and Hammer, a recent work by Charlie Barber inspired by the instruments of the Javanese gamelan.

The programme also features Japan’s Toru Takemitsu with a performance of his atmospheric Rain Tree and Australian Peter Sculthorpe who derives much of his inspiration from Aboriginal and Balinese sounds and the music of wind and thunder.

The concert also includes the hypnotic, oriental sound world of John Cage and Lou Harrison, the jazzy polyrhythms of Conlon Nancarrow and Seventh Heaven, a work specially written for the Band by Mark Lockett.
