Spatial Tempi (1980)

pno, 3 perc

A dramatc and physically exciting concert consisting entirely of percussion works, three of which have been newly commissioned (by Chapter with funds supplied by the Welsh Arts Council). The exception is Lift-Off!, a work for three percussionists by Russell Peck, which transmits the tension and climatic euphoria od a space-launching.

Put That Light Out, a piece which explores the transition between ultra-violet and infra-red light with the aid of two percussionists, pianists, tape and lights, has been written by Jeffery Wilson, who is currently doing post-graduate work in the electronic studio of the Royal College of Music.

Nicholas Wilson has written About Time, a study of the different qualities of materials from which instruments are made, in respect of their timbre, resonance, envelope and the various movements required to produce sound.

And the programme also includes El Puerto Ricercare, a piece based on musical material for three percussionists and pianist, written by Charlie Barber.

First performed by the New Arts Consort at Chapter Theatre, Cardiff on 7 September 1980
with Noriko Kawai (piano), Simon Limbrick (percussion), Nickolas Ormrod (percussion) and Jeffery Wilson (percussion)
