Concertino (1991)
for solo piano
Duration: c. 5 minutes
This work began life in 1990 as a composition for solo piano, written for the American choreographer Scott Clark for a workshop presented at the Scottish Youth Dance Festival in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh.
The work was developed in 1991 for another dance and music project about the meeting in America in 1953 between Igor Stravinsky and Dylan Thomasย to discuss a new opera. Although the work neither quotes nor directly references Stravinskyโs music, it reflects something of his characteristic rhythmic energy and draws on aspects of the harmonic language associated with his neoclassical period.
First performed by David Appleton at the Sherman Arena Theatre, Cardiff on 9 December 1994
